Shillong: A surge of property crimes and violent attacks hit Meghalaya this month. Motorcycle owners took the brunt of the thefts. Eddie Erison Kharkongor reported his bike, ML-05V-2936, stolen from Lower Mawprem Pdengshnong on July 14. Biden K Sangma lost his motorcycle, ML-05AH-0190, from Mawlai Nongpdeng between July 13 and 14. Hamebansan Kharjahrin reported his bike, ML-10C-8515, stolen from Ri-Bhoi on July 14, and Rajeev Baidya lost his scooter, ML-05Q-0194, in Shillong that same morning. Lasterborn Sohtun lost his vehicle, ML-05Y-1797, from Jail Road on July 13. Tribath N Sangma reported his brand-new motorcycle stolen from Williamnagar on July 11.
Burglars targeted businesses and homes. Thieves hit six shops at the Seven Sisters Falls viewpoint in Mawblang, stealing garments and groceries. Sopon Ch Sangma reported a break-in at his Chandmari Bazar shop on July 15. The Meghalaya Defence Civilian Workers Credit Co-operative Society near Umshyrpi Bridge and the Langtor Higher Secondary School office in Eastern West Khasi Hills were also burglarized. Equipment worth Rs 4,32,583 was stolen from an Airtel tower at Laitpynter, while BSNL equipment was taken from Nonglakhiat Pdeng. A Chyne reported a home break-in at Mawlai Nongmali-III where thieves took gold rings, cash, and a phone.
Violence left one woman dead. H Marwein reported that 63-year-old Bailing Wahlang attacked 56-year-old Sniti Wahlang in Pyndenumsaw village on July 14. "The woman was shifted to Mawkyrwat Civil Hospital, where the attending MO declared her brought dead."
Other assaults occurred. Unidentified men robbed a 22-year-old near Old Anjalee Petrol Pump on July 10. Another male resident of Lower Mawprem was hospitalized after an assault that same day. A woman in WJH reported an attack with a stone and stick on July 5.
Financial crimes persist. Three people cheated a Shillong woman of Rs 3.4 lakh in a QNET scheme. Police also detained 29-year-old Om Vir Singh for impersonating an Army official at the Eastern Air Force Command. Meanwhile, rural residents reported stolen livestock, including two heads of cattle in East Garo Hills and three in Phlangkaruh village.
