Shillong: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma toured the Assam Regimental Centre in Shillong on Saturday. He met with soldiers and Agniveers while inspecting the base's gear and training capabilities. The visit marked a rare moment for an Assam leader. Sarma noted that predecessors like Vishnuram Medhi and Vimala Prasad Chaliha also made the trek.
Sarma emphasized the deep ties between the state and the military unit. Hundreds of young men from Assam train at the facility annually. The Chief Minister described the site as a living connection to the region's past. "An important point is that this regiment also reflects the sentiment of undivided Assam. That is not history," he said.
The day included weapon demonstrations and briefings on local operations. Sarma expressed gratitude for the hospitality shown by the troops. He admitted one day was insufficient to grasp the full scope of the center's work. He plans to return soon. The visit reinforced his belief in the regiment as a core part of Assam's identity.
