Guwahati: Upper Assam is drowning. Floodwaters surged on July 19, forcing the state government to call in the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force. Officials want these military branches on standby to handle potential evacuation and rescue missions if conditions degrade further.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed the request via a post on X. The crisis hit Sivasagar, Charaideo, and Jorhat the hardest. Water levels continue to rise. "As the flood situation in Sivasagar, Charaideo and Jorhat continues to worsen, Government of Assam has requested the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force to be on standby to support evacuation and rescue operations, if required," Sarma said.
The state government is not sitting idle. Sarma dispatched senior ministers Ajanta Neog, Bimal Bora, Keshab Mahanta, and Sushanta Borgohain to the affected districts. These ministers must supervise relief distribution and watch the progress on the ground. They need to ensure families get help fast.
Sarma remains locked in for the duration of the emergency. He tracks the weather and water levels twenty-four hours a day. He insists that his cabinet will take every step to save lives and distribute relief to everyone trapped by the rising tides.
