Baksa Officials Review Disaster Readiness for Floods and Storms

Guwahati: Baksa District Commissioner Kimnei Changsan convened a meeting on September 5 to audit the region's readiness for storms and floods. Held at the District Commissioner's Office, the session addressed damage assessments for the 2026-27 period. Attendees included MLAs Thaneswar Basumatary and Maneswar Brahma, alongside ADC and DDMA CEO Mustafa Salim Ahmed, District Project Officer Kakul Krishna Sharma, and various department heads and field officials.

Mustafa Salim Ahmed confirmed that authorities track water levels daily. Emergency units stay ready. Fire and Emergency Services, Civil Defence volunteers, and the District Disaster Response Force remain on standby for rapid deployment. The district also coordinates with Bhutanese authorities to track water discharge from the Kurichhu Dam. Officials reported no current severe threats, though all teams remain on high alert.

Commissioner Changsan evaluated project proposals from the PWD Roads, Irrigation, APDCL, Soil Conservation, and PHE departments. The review covered the status of Circle-Level Task Force meetings, risk reports, and site selections for potential relief camps. Departments must submit extra proposals if gaps exist.

MLA Thaneswar Basumatary pushed for consistent site inspections, particularly regarding soil erosion. He noted, "the need for regular field visits and assessment of affected areas" remains a priority. MLA Maneswar Brahma echoed these concerns, calling for tight collaboration between offices to guarantee fast responses. The meeting ended with an order for every department to maintain strict vigilance and teamwork across the district.
