Guwahati: Floods have swamped Assam, hitting 1.7 lakh residents across 12 districts. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed on Monday that relief efforts are moving into high gear. Four cabinet ministers, Ajanta Neog, Bimal Bora, Keshab Mahanta, and Sushanta Borgohain, are now overseeing operations in the hardest-hit zones. Sarma stated, "We have sent four Assam cabinet ministers to flood-hit areas to monitor rescue and relief efforts."
The administration wants the Army and Air Force on standby. Medical teams are fanning out to screen vulnerable groups and keep medicine supplies moving. The state is operating a 24-hour watch to stop disease outbreaks and secure public health.
Flash floods have crippled parts of Jorhat and Kakojan. Water swallowed a segment of National Highway 715, cutting off traffic. Pranab Bora, Jorhat Fire Station In-charge, reported that eight boats are currently conducting rescues. "We are operating across the entire district," said Bora. Water levels are showing a slight decline, offering a sliver of hope.
Meanwhile, the Karbi Anglong District Disaster Management Authority has shuttered every waterfall picnic spot. District Commissioner Anamika Saikia issued the order to prevent accidents. Officials warned residents to stay clear of all water bodies until the weather breaks. Sarma has ordered all local MPs and MLAs to stay on the ground and keep a close eye on the rising water.
