Sivasagar Puja Committees Scrap Cultural Events Following Deadly Assam Floods

Guwahati: Sivasagar puja committees are stripping back festivities this year. Devastating floods across Sivasagar and Charaideo districts forced organizers to cancel all cultural programs. Committees want to honor the more than 100 people who died in the recent surge. Grief stops the music.

The Amolapatty Hindu Dharma Samaj Namghar Samity held an annual meeting with president Arabinda Baruah. They voted to keep their 128th anniversary strictly traditional. Rituals will proceed, but celebrations will remain quiet.

The Barowari Puja Committee is also pulling back. They will host the 93rd edition of their event at the historic Kali Prasad Memorial Hall without fanfare. Manoj Bhagawati, the committee's cultural in-charge, stated, "The 93rd edition of the Sivasagar Barowari Puja would be a low-key affair."

Other groups are following suit. Kishore Lahori of the Mandir Road Bengali Puja Samity confirmed they will limit activities to a traditional aarti. The historic 297-year-old Durga Puja at Devi Doul is also scaling down. Committees across the region are cutting extra events to respect the dead.
