Guwahati: Floods stopped the clock. Registrar General of India Mrityunjay Kumar Narayan confirmed that the Census 2027 houselisting phase in Charaideo and Sivasagar districts now runs until October 31, 2026. The initial deadline was September 30. Heavy rains forced officials to suspend training and field work in these specific regions back in August.
The official gazette notification remains clear on the adjustment: "Provided that in respect of the Charaideo and Sivasagar districts of the state of Assam, the period of houselisting operations of the Census of India 2027 shall be extended up to October 31, 2026."
Most of Assam finished the first phase between August 17 and September 15. The national exercise began April 1 across all states and Union territories. This process maps out every structure and household to build a framework for future population counts. The full Census 2027 rollout happens in two stages. Houselisting started in April 2026, while the actual population head count begins in February 2027. Originally set for 2021, the decennial count stalled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Citizens retain the option to self-enumerate. This must happen during the 15-day window just before the house-to-house collection starts in their area. Each state government dictates the specific 30-day window for these activities.
