Guwahati: Guwahati police and Central Reserve Police Force troops are blanketing the city with checkpoints. The 80th Independence Day is near. Authorities started round-the-clock security sweeps to lock down the area before the August 15 celebrations.
Police are stopping two-wheelers and four-wheelers at key junctions across the capital. Night-time naka operations are now in full swing at Maligaon, Khanapara, Jalukbari, and the area surrounding Gauhati High Court. Teams monitor all vehicle movement to keep the city safe.
Officers are actively ticketing motorists and detaining rule breakers found during these sweeps. Security teams intend to keep the pressure high across the city until the holiday ends. As local officials stated, the force is "conducting night-time naka checking at multiple points across the city" to ensure public safety.

The state remains on high alert following boycott calls from militant outfits, including ULFA(I) and NSCN/GPRN. These groups pushed for a public withdrawal from Independence Day events across Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, and Nagaland. While the militants stopped short of calling a general strike due to the ongoing flood crisis, they still urged citizens to shun the festivities.
Police have extended their reach beyond the capital, tightening watch over inter-state borders to block potential subversion. Officials also focused on protecting vital installations and event venues. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is slated to hoist the national flag at the Khanapara field, with state ministers leading similar events at designated spots across the region. High-level security meetings led by the chief secretary and the Director General of Police have greenlit these expanded defense measures.

The Northeast Frontier Railway is now part of the security surge. The Railway Protection Force kicked up patrols at stations and on moving trains to lock down passenger areas, platforms, and waiting halls. RPF units are running full sweeps with bomb-sniffing dogs to scan luggage and clear out unattended items.
Railway authorities are pushing public alerts to keep travelers sharp. Passengers are warned to watch for suspicious actors and reject packages from strangers. This rail lockdown adds a new layer to the defense plan, which already includes heavy intelligence sharing and route sanitization across all major venues.

Security efforts have pushed into the Tinsukia district. Local police are running anti-sabotage sweeps at strategic sites and vulnerable installations to flush out potential threats before the national holiday.
Violence flared near the border early Friday. Suspected cadres from ULFA-I and NSCN-K (Yung Aung) opened fire on an Assam Rifles post in the Changlang district of Arunachal Pradesh at 3:15 am. The troops returned fire and chased the attackers into the jungle. No injuries were reported, but security forces have ramped up patrols and area dominance tactics in the surrounding forests.
