Guwahati: Guwahati police cut 37 home guards from their posts on July 31, 2026. The staff served as orderlies and static guards for top officials. They finished their six-month tenure. The Commissioner of Police released the order citing the Assam Home Guards Act and Rules of 1947, as amended in 2015. This decision followed a directive from the Directorate General of Civil Defence and Commandant General of Home Guards.
These guards protected key figures at the Gauhati High Court and various state offices. The list of locations included homes and offices of serving and former judges, Cabinet Minister Ashok Singhal, and Congress MLA Bhupen Bora. Personnel also guarded former Meghalaya Governor Satyapal Malik and the late Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Public facilities like the Foreigners Regional Registration Office and the Record Building at Dispur lost staff as well.
Police sources labeled this move as a routine rotation. Officials reviewed the deployments after the mandatory six-month term ended. The order specified, "The Home Guards have been relieved from their duties with effect from July 31, 2026." The police department provided no replacement names in the release. Guards at police stations and court complexes must now report elsewhere.
