Shillong: Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee president Vincent H Pala has accused Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar of bribing villagers. Pala claims the National People’s Party leader handed out 20 lakh rupees to influence the upcoming Shillong Lok Sabha by-election.
Pala alleges that Dhar visited the village and ordered residents to vote for his party. The Deputy Chief Minister reportedly threatened legal repercussions against those who refused his orders. Local leaders are facing immense pressure from government officials.
“Ua ia songona re·angenba, gong lak 20 tangkako ra·e, uni agangipa mandena pu·onchina songni manderangko ge·etaha. Uamang pu·onjaode uamangni kosako ja·kuko de·na ua ka·mikkenataha,” Pala stated. He spent three days in Dhar’s constituency gathering evidence of these intimidation tactics.
Pala argues that these actions show a government focused solely on winning elections rather than serving the public. He also raised concerns regarding the state coal mining sector. While coal deposits exist in Jaintia Hills, West Khasi Hills, and Garo Hills, Pala questions where the profits go. He warns that reopening mines without transparency will hurt common citizens and leave the public without any real support.
