Guwahati: Ashik Ali, 26, is recovering at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital today. Police shot the murder suspect in the leg during an early morning operation in Dharapur on Tuesday, October 6. He allegedly tried to bolt from police custody. The shooting occurred just as his eight-day detention period expired and he was due in court.
Ali arrived at GMCH at 5.30 am. He suffered two bullet wounds in his right leg. Dr. Devajit Choudhury, the hospital superintendent, confirmed the injuries. One shot hit the knee joint from behind and exited through the front. A second bullet struck his ankle. Both injuries have clear entry and exit points. Doctors report that his nerves and blood vessels are intact. "There were two bullet injuries with entry and exit. One at the knee joint, which was shot from behind and the bullet went out from the front side, and another at the ankle joint. The blood vessels and nerves are intact," Choudhury said. Ali remains out of danger.
The suspect was initially taken to Garol before arriving at the hospital. He is the prime suspect in the death of 21-year-old Nimisha Thakuria. Police found the Gauhati University sociology student dead at Rudra's Kitchen Homestay on September 25. Thakuria lived in the Dharapur area under the Azara police station jurisdiction.
Ali admitted to having a relationship with the victim. He previously claimed Thakuria died by suicide, asserting she hanged herself. Guwahati Deputy Commissioner of Police Bolin Deori dismissed the claim as unverified. Investigators are currently checking all angles. They are reviewing the events leading up to the incident and the injuries documented during the inquest. Police continue to hold the suspect in custody.
