East Garo Hills Landowners Issue 30-Day Ultimatum Over NH-217 Payments

Shillong: Landowners and Nokmas from Dobu, Nengkha, and Naringgre villages gave authorities a 30-day ultimatum to pay for land seized for the National Highway-217 expansion. They sent a joint memorandum to the Chief Secretary, the Revenue and Disaster Management Department, the Competent Authority for Land Acquisition, and the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited.

Construction stops if money stays missing. The group demanded full settlement including statutory benefits and interest payments. Villagers already finished land surveys, property measurements, and compensation assessments.

Despite this cooperation, the administration stalled. Families face financial hardship after losing homes, trees, and crops to the road project. The memorandum states, "The prolonged delay has caused severe financial distress" to those impacted by the acquisition. The group expects officials to provide a formal payment schedule before the one-month deadline expires.
