Guwahati: Assam legislators received a new bill on July 27 aiming to strip away red tape for state-led construction. Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Keshab Mahanta tabled the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement (Assam Amendment) Bill, 2026. It cuts through bureaucratic stalls for specific public projects.
The state cabinet greenlit the move on July 10. The proposal grants exemptions from the parent Act for projects spanning national security, rural infrastructure, and affordable housing. It also covers state-backed industrial estates, industrial corridors, and airport-linked urban development like aerocity projects. Land seizure will hit a minimum.
Minister Mahanta defended the move during the session. He claimed the "amendment is aimed at facilitating the timely execution of critical infrastructure and development projects while ensuring that land acquisition is restricted to the minimum area required for such projects."
Changes to Section 40 remain a focal point. This adjustment gives the government power to trigger urgency clauses during declared natural disasters. The bill now heads for assembly debate and further consideration.
