Shillong: A five-year-old boy died Friday after a swollen stream swept him away in Ri Bhoi. Mewanshwa Mawblei was playing near his home in Noksikgittim village when the current dragged him into the water. Residents and police searched the area for hours. They found his body at 11 am. Doctors at P.A. Sangma International Medical College and Hospital declared the boy dead on arrival.
Disaster struck again nearby. A landslide buried a house at Chota Tandu near the Meghalaya-Assam border at 7:30 am. The slide trapped three sleeping victims. Chandra Marak, 35, Sunita Sangma, 25, and seven-year-old Rikmosha Sangma suffered serious injuries. Medics at ARHI Hospital at 11th Mile in Mawsmai treated the survivors.
This household is no stranger to tragedy. The family "suffered a similar landslide in 2020 in which two people were killed." Soil and debris crushed their home while they slept, repeating a deadly pattern from four years ago.
