Shillong: A residential building in Umran, Ri-Bhoi, burned to the ground early Tuesday morning. The home, owned by Bijenti Basaiawmoit, was lost at 4 am. Flames tore through the structure, destroying every household belonging inside.
A young man slept through the start of the blaze. He woke to find the home burning and jumped through a window to escape. He survived without injuries. Neighbors arrived to help, but the fire moved too fast for them to gain control.
Fire and Emergency Services crews eventually arrived and extinguished the flames. Authorities have not confirmed the official cause of the incident. Investigators currently suspect an electrical short circuit. As one report noted, the house was "completely destroyed" in the inferno.
