Shillong: A fast-moving fire leveled four shops on GS Road near the Ajmera building this Sunday. The blaze began in a local restaurant before jumping to three adjacent businesses. State firefighters reached the scene shortly after the Bara Bazar fire station received the call.
The structure was old and built of wood. These conditions made the fire dangerous. Crews fought the flames for 45 minutes before gaining control of the site. Officer-in-Charge Dinesh Rai stated, "The fire had started in one of the adjoining restaurants before spreading to nearby shops."
Firefighters broke through tin roofing to douse the interior. They kept a second fire tender on standby to prevent the inferno from leaping to more buildings. The rapid intervention saved the congested commercial stretch from further damage. No deaths or injuries occurred. Officials have yet to determine what started the fire, and a damage assessment is still pending.
