Shillong: A short circuit ripped through two residential blocks at Kench’s Trace on Saturday. The fire leveled the structures next to the Shri Satguru Kabir Ashram. Emergency crews ruled out foul play immediately.
Fire and Emergency Services teamed up with the District Disaster Management Authority on Sunday to inspect the wreckage. Iewduh Fire Station Officer Dinesh Rai pinpointed the origin. The short circuit touched off a stack of dry wood and plastic. The flames moved fast. Fire consumed the homes in only 20 minutes.
“After our inspection, it has been confirmed that the fire was caused by a short circuit. There is no indication of any foul play,” said Rai. Five fire tenders battled the inferno. Personnel from the 117 Territorial Army helped suppress the heat. Their work stopped the fire from jumping to the main Kabir Ashram building.
Seven families lost their belongings in the chaos. Nobody died. No animals were harmed in the incident. Authorities shifted the displaced residents into temporary housing while cleanup efforts continue.
