AIUDF Slams Gujarat Uniform Civil Code as BJP Agenda

Guwahati: AIUDF general secretary Rafiqul Islam blasted the Uniform Civil Code as a calculated BJP power grab. He claims the ruling party plans to force the law onto a diverse population. The UCC threatens to override long-standing traditions and personal laws held by various religious groups.

President Droupadi Murmu signed the Gujarat UCC Bill into law on September 17. The state government published the legislation in its official gazette on October 1. Gujarat is now the second state to enact these rules after Uttarakhand. It covers marriage, divorce, inheritance, succession, and live-in relationships.

Islam remains firm in his party's resistance to the move. He argues that India thrives on the coexistence of different communities under the protection of the Constitution. "UCC is a sinister agenda of the BJP. They want to implement it forcibly," Islam said. The state must still notify the specific rules before the code takes full effect across Gujarat.
