Tata Semiconductor Plant Starts Pilot Chip Production in Assam

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed on October 3 that pilot chip production is officially underway at the Tata semiconductor facility in Jagiroad. The site reached a major milestone with the completion of its first clean room. Construction continues on a second clean room at the Morigaon district location.

Sarma anticipates a formal inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi between December and January. The event will likely draw top leaders from across the country. "Regarding the semiconductor facility, I had come a few days ago. The clean room is already ready. They have started production of pilot chips," Sarma said.

Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Pvt Ltd (TSAT) is backing the project with a Rs 27,000 crore investment. The facility targets a massive output of 48 million chips every day. It stands as a win for the India Semiconductor Mission, which approved the site in February 2024. Officials label this India's first indigenous assembly and test hub for both domestic and global markets.

The plant will employ wire bonding, flip chip, and integrated systems packaging. These technologies serve the automotive, electric vehicle, communications, and consumer electronics sectors. Beyond the hardware, the project promises a massive economic boost. Estimates suggest the facility will generate 27,000 direct and indirect jobs for the region.
