Assam family blames moneylenders for man's suicide

Guwahati: Azid Ali, 30, died by suicide on October 1 near the Haripani railway gate in Chalatapara, Assam. He jumped in front of a moving train. His family claims constant harassment from local moneylenders drove him to take his own life.

Hanif Ali, the victim's brother, filed an FIR at the Abhayapuri police station. The complaint names two Nayagaon residents, Babul Hussain and Iman Ali, as the primary aggressors. Azid Ali had borrowed Rs 1.5 lakh from Hussain and an additional Rs 40,000 from Iman Ali. The loans allegedly carried a 10 per cent interest rate.

The family stated that Azid struggled under the weight of the debt despite making monthly interest payments. The lenders allegedly kept applying pressure, causing severe mental distress. Hanif Ali is now demanding justice for his brother. He recently stated, "My brother was under severe mental distress."

Azid leaves behind a wife who is nine months pregnant. Police are investigating the allegations outlined in the FIR.
