Guwahati: Guwahati Municipal Corporation put six Rapid Response Teams on the streets Sunday, October 4. These crews will patrol the city to enforce civic codes and collect spot fines. One team operates in each of the six administrative divisions. They monitor sanitation, waste disposal, and public hygiene. Each blue-and-white vehicle carries sanitary inspectors and GMC police.

Executive engineers supervise the teams locally. The additional commissioner oversees the entire enforcement operation. GMC Mayor Mrigen Sarania said the goal is simple. "The initiative was aimed at strengthening supervision at the field level and ensuring that violations of civic norms do not go unchecked," Sarania stated.

Fines apply to several common offenses. Spitting costs Rs 300. Littering, public urination, illegal waste dumping, and using banned plastics carry a Rs 500 penalty. Dumping construction waste results in a Rs 2,000 fine, while chemical waste disposal hits for Rs 5,000. Blocking natural drainage channels draws the stiffest penalty at Rs 25,000.

The teams also handle burning trash, open defecation, and emergency civic complaints. Residents can report problems or seek help by calling the GMC helpline at 8811007000.
