Guwahati Resident Fined for Blocking Road With Construction Supplies

Guwahati: Guwahati Municipal Corporation officials fined Dr. S. M. Bhagawaty 10,000 rupees for dumping construction materials on a public road in the Roopnagar locality. Inspectors caught the resident after finding piles of sand, bricks, and stone aggregates covering the street outside his home.

The material spilled into the lane, forcing traffic to a crawl and endangering pedestrians. The blockade restricted access for both drivers and those walking by. The GMC released photos of the site and the penalty receipt to prove the violation.

Homeowners often turn public roads into storage yards for building supplies. This habit narrows streets and creates safety risks. These obstructions also hamper emergency responders. The GMC stated, "The material had spilled over onto the roadside, encroaching on public space and blocking access for both vehicular traffic and pedestrians."

City authorities want to stop this practice. They aim to keep streets open for residents. This enforcement serves as a warning against using city property for private storage.
