Guwahati: Guwahati Municipal Corporation staff face a total freeze on leave effective immediately. Commissioner and Principal Census Officer Chinmoy Prakash Phookan issued the directive on July 17. The order mandates that all trainers, supervisors, enumerators, and associated officials secure official clearance before taking any time off. No one skips out on this work.

Phookan sent the instructions to all department heads and branch officers to ensure the nationwide count stays on track. The agency warned employees that any tampering with official documents carries heavy legal weight. Under Section 11 of the Census Act, 1948, offenders face "imprisonment of up to three years, a fine of up to Rs 1,000, or both." The GMC expects full compliance as field preparations for the 2027 exercise pick up speed.
