Shillong: East Khasi Hills district officials are currently vetting responses from roadside vendors facing eviction. These merchants received notices for encroaching on the Shillong-Dawki highway. Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal confirmed he is working with the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited to decide the next steps. They will review all vendor replies before taking further action.
The notices target stalls at the 4th Mile and 7th Mile stretches in Upper Shillong. Local village authorities raised road safety alarms, catching the attention of the Meghalaya High Court. The court noted the problem of unauthorized occupation along national highways. Previous clearance efforts failed to stop the stalls from returning. Baranwal said, "The responses will be reviewed jointly with the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) before the next course of action is decided."
The administration is also cracking down on booze. The Excise Department has launched raids to stop illicit liquor sales in the 4th Mile and 7th Mile zones. Agents have already completed three to four rounds of raids. They seized several cartons and bottles of Indian-Made Foreign Liquor. No specific date for the final stall removal is set yet.
