Shillong: The India Meteorological Department is scouting sites in Tura to install a second Doppler Weather Radar for Meghalaya. This facility aims to sharpen weather monitoring across the western part of the state and the Garo Hills. It is currently in the site-assessment phase.
The system would extend its reach roughly 100 km. It complements the existing radar located in Sohra. Forecasters need better data. The proposed station would track intense storms and heavy rain with higher precision, allowing officials to watch volatile weather systems move in real time.
This project sits within a wider push to place 11 new radars throughout the Northeast. The region currently leans on three aging units in Sohra, Mohanbari, and Agartala, all exceeding 15 years of service. An IMD scientist noted the current situation requires updates, stating, "If approved, the Tura radar will supplement the existing facility at Sohra, providing more localised data for the Garo Hills and surrounding areas."
Monsoon threats remain constant. A lightning strike killed two brothers and injured eight others on Tuesday. Officials maintain that this specific radar plan was not a direct reaction to that tragedy. However, the event underscores the necessity for better tools. The proposal awaits final technical review and government approval.
