East Khasi Hills Officials Urge Calm Over Electoral Roll Changes

Shillong: East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal told residents on Friday to stay calm if their names disappear from draft electoral rolls. The Special Intensive Revision drive aims to clean up voter lists by adding genuine citizens and booting non-citizens who hold invalid documents.

Baranwal explained that the district has a high count of proposed deletions because of its cosmopolitan mix. Central government staff often get voter cards while working in Shillong but fail to remove their names after they transfer elsewhere. He promised the administration will “handhold” eligible voters through the verification process and allow enough time for document submission.

The effort is a massive grind. Booth Level Officers handled between 700 and 1,000 electors each while managing form distribution, data entry, and filing assistance. Officials pushed through the work despite a tight calendar and limited working days. When homeowners refused to take forms, staff simply photographed the house or pasted the paperwork on the premises to keep the process moving while respecting privacy.
