Agartala: The Tripura Human Rights Commission is cracking the whip on prison authorities. Officials must pay convict Sarathi Sarkar 1.5 lakh rupees. The commission issued the order to settle the debt after Sarkar finally received surgery for bilateral ACL tears at AGMC and GBP Hospital in Agartala on June 20. He left the facility on June 25.
Prison guards originally faced heat for failing to move Sarkar to Kolkata’s SSKM Hospital. The commission pushed for the transfer in July 2026, citing medical negligence. IG Prisons Upendra Jamatia defended the choice to stay in Agartala. He noted, "The AGMC and GBP Hospital had acquired the necessary equipment to perform the surgery."
Sarkar made a full recovery. Doctors examined him on July 27 and confirmed he was walking well with only minor pain. The commission dropped the charge of procedural negligence under Section 18(c) of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993, because the surgery was a success. Prison bosses failed to notify the commission before the operation, but officials are letting that slide.
Money remains the final hurdle. The cash has not arrived. Jamatia claimed he is talking with the Home Department to release the funds. The commission gave the state one month to prove they paid up. They will list the case again to verify compliance.
