Agartala: Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha laid the foundation stone for the new Agartala Government Eye Hospital at the Capital Complex on Friday. The state aims to boost specialized medical services. This flagship project will function under the Agartala Government Medical College.

The facility will be a modern G+4 building. Construction should finish within two years. It will hold 100 beds and host advanced medical equipment to treat cataracts, glaucoma, retinal diseases, and newborn eye issues. Officials hope it becomes a Centre of Excellence for the Northeast.

Saha argued that existing eye care departments cannot keep up with modern patient needs. “We are now in an era of modernization, and people’s expectations are much higher,” he said. The new space will also serve as a hub for medical education.

Digital upgrades remain a priority. Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision, the state has already issued ABHA cards to 80 per cent of the population. Saha also promised to bolster healthcare infrastructure at the district and sub-divisional levels.

The Chief Minister took time to hit back at the Opposition during the event. He blamed poor planning by the previous administration for rainwater leaks at the GBP Hospital trauma centre. Mayor Dipak Majumder and Health Secretary Kiran Gitte attended the ceremony alongside other senior department representatives.
