Agartala: India marked the 82nd birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on Thursday. Congress workers across the country and throughout Tripura held solemn ceremonies to remember the Bharat Ratna recipient. It was a busy day. The Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee kicked off events in Agartala with a flag hoisting at Congress Bhavan. Party members then placed flowers at Gandhi’s statue before heading to Shaheed Bedi in Gandhi Ghat to pay their final respects.

Leaders recognized the day as Sadbhavana Diwas, highlighting Gandhi’s push for national unity, high-tech governance, and rural empowerment. State president Ashish Kumar Saha joined MLA Sudip Roy Barman and senior leader Gopal Chandra Roy to lead the proceedings. Saha praised the former leader as a pioneer of scientific advancement and the architect of the Panchayati Raj system. He noted the late Prime Minister inspired a generation as the country’s youngest leader. "Rajiv Gandhi’s ideals of peace, unity, and development continue to guide us. On his birth anniversary, we pledge to follow the path he showed," Saha declared.

The events expanded beyond the capital. Congress offices in districts and blocks held their own programs to connect his legacy to current political challenges. Speakers aimed sharp barbs at the current political climate. They claimed that democratic values face threats today, contrasting Gandhi’s inclusive vision with recent efforts to weaken national institutions. The party ended the day by vowing to protect the social harmony and technological foundation that Gandhi built during his tenure.
