Shillong: Paper trails are clogging up the system in Shillong. East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal reported a major disconnect between physical tenant verification forms held by locality leaders and data actually sitting on the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act portal. Localities are sticking to old habits while ignoring the digital requirement.
Baranwal confirmed the administration held five meetings to bridge this gap. These sessions included shnong headmen, Hima chiefs, Elaka heads, and Cantonment Board staff. Officials also spoke with the Superintendent of Police to iron out coordination issues. The focus remains on getting local leaders to dump their paper files into the online system.
The administration is currently pushing for better portal access. Officials are handing out login credentials to the Cantonment Board to cover those residents. The state government is tweaking the software to make it easier to use. Hima and Elaka leaders must now help push compliance into rural and suburban reaches. The law hits every tenant, no matter the zip code.
Baranwal dodged questions about debates surrounding different versions of the law. He intends to stick to the rulebook as it stands today. He told reporters, "The administration's immediate focus remained on ensuring that tenant information already collected through physical verification is uploaded to the MRSSA portal and that implementation is carried out uniformly at all localities in East Khasi Hills."
