Shillong: East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal met with traditional heads on Tuesday to tighten tenant registration. The administration wants full compliance with the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act. Officials convened two meetings at the district conference hall. These included leaders from urban and rural areas, Dorbar Shnongs, and traditional Dorbar Raids and Elakas. It is the first time the district engaged these chiefs regarding the law.
Baranwal explained that the government needs support to expand the reach of the Act. He clarified that the local administration must track everyone living in the district. "Our focus is on ensuring that all tenants, irrespective of their ethnicity, religion or permanent residence, are registered as mandated under the Act," he said. Officials also checked the progress of 16 pilot localities. These sites already use laptops and internet tools for digital registration.
Participants suggested new ways to simplify the system. They want downloadable spreadsheets for police and a mobile app. Some requested that Rangbah Dongs get portal access to make entries. Baranwal noted these requests for the state government. The administration tracks data via an online dashboard shared with the Superintendent of Police. Officials also plan to use zonal magistrates to drive compliance. The success of the project rests with local ownership, not just the state.
