East Khasi Hills Official Orders Probe Into Police Extortion Claims

Shillong: East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal ordered an independent magisterial inquiry into claims of police extortion. The Khasi Students’ Union flagged the incident after a video went viral. The investigation must wrap up by October 31.

A senior Additional District Magistrate will lead the search for facts. The probe includes gathering testimony from complainants, visitors to the check-post, the specific police constables involved, and local transporters. Baranwal dismissed an earlier internal report from the Superintendent of Police as one-sided. He noted, "The report from the police is only representing the side from the police."

Baranwal wants the full story. He intends to weigh every perspective before deciding who holds responsibility for the alleged misconduct. The official promised a thorough look at the check-post incident to settle the matter.
