Shillong: East Khasi Hills police booked three top Khasi Students’ Union leaders for vandalizing two Meghalaya High Court vehicles. The attacks occurred at Mawlai Phudmuri and Mawlai Nonglum on the evening of August 19. Police named KSU president Raymond Kharjana, general secretary Reuben Najiar, and vice-president Pynkmenlang Sanmiet in the filings.
Authorities produced the trio before the District and Sessions Court on Saturday. These suspects already face charges for other violence that broke out that same day, including multiple attacks on Assam tourist vehicles.
This legal push happens just days before a scheduled September 1 High Court hearing. The state must hand over a fresh status report and case diaries in PIL No. 16 of 2026, titled Registrar General, High Court of Meghalaya vs State of Meghalaya. During an August 24 session, a Division Bench of Justices Hamarsan Singh Thangkhiew and Wanlura Diengdoh reviewed the case. They noted that, besides the KSU office-bearers, no other suspects had been caught. Advocate General Amit Kumar told the court that an "SIT had been constituted" to track down those responsible. The bench maintained the matter on the docket for the upcoming September date.
