Shillong: East Khasi Hills officials pulled the plug on a planned Khasi Students’ Union protest. The union intended to hold a sit-in Monday near the U Kiang Nangbah statue by Civil Hospital. Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal confirmed the denial of permission. He insists the administration must keep the peace while the Assembly starts its autumn session.
The KSU remains defiant. They appear set to push forward despite the official block. Similar demonstrations are slated for Tuesday across seven districts in the Khasi-Jaintia Hills.
Security is tight. Central Armed Police Forces are patrolling streets across Shillong to keep residents safe. Baranwal claims this heavy presence stays until citizens feel secure. He dismissed concerns that the city is unsafe for visitors after recent isolated trouble. "We are here to ensure their safety and even the Tourism Department has a dedicated helpline for all tourists," Baranwal said. The sit-in was scheduled to start at 11 am Monday.
