Titoswell Chyne Challenges KHADC on Illegal Toll Gates and Sohra Syiem

Shillong: UDP general secretary Titoswell Chyne is putting the heat on the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council. Chyne, who serves as Leader of the Opposition, claims the council bypassed mandatory open tender processes to install new toll gates. These actions directly contradict campaign promises made by the new Executive Committee. The committee vowed to scrap illegal toll gates across the region.

Chyne wants the public to vet which gates operate legally and which are unauthorized. He did not pinpoint specific locations. He simply demanded the administration follow proper procedure. When asked if the Executive Committee broke its word, Chyne confirmed that he believed it did.

The opposition leader also turned his attention to the chieftaincy in Sohra. He pressed the Executive Committee to stop dragging its feet and install a full-fledged Syiem. The traditional institution finished its election process, but the council opted for an acting chief instead of handing over the required Sanad. Chyne stated: "I would leave the matter to the wisdom of the Executive Committee and its assessment of the applicable rules and circumstances."

He stopped short of challenging the legal authority of the council to review the case. Still, he insists the transition must move forward. Traditional customs and district council regulations must both carry weight, he noted. For now, the administration sits on the decision.
