Lawmakers Demand Immediate Repairs After Kisama Landslide

Kohima: Southern Angami-I MLA Kevipodi Sophie and Southern Angami-II MLA Kropol Vitsu inspected a 300-metre-long landslide on NH-2 at Kisama today. The slide, which extends 70 metres up the hillside, completely cut off travel between Nagaland and Manipur on August 13. Connectivity is dead.

The two lawmakers directed the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) to start clearance work on Tuesday. The immediate goal is to open a path for pedestrians and light vehicles. Heavy vehicles must wait. NHIDCL Nagaland Executive Director R.P. Singh confirmed that machinery was held back until technical experts arrive on Tuesday to approve a plan.

The current alternate route via Phesama Main Junction, Rhododendron, Kisama, and Kigwema is crumbling under heavy traffic volume. Vitsu noted that if the state government provides an estimate, NHIDCL will request funds from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways to fix the detour.

Vitsu emphasized that long-term fixes require better drainage and soil analysis. He warned that the road cannot wait. "The road serves people throughout the year and that immediate restoration was necessary to reduce the hardship faced by villagers, students, commuters and travellers between Nagaland and Manipur," Vitsu said. Officials from the Southern Angami Public Organisation and the Kohima Deputy Commissioner joined the site visit to monitor the progress.
