Agartala: The Tripura Human Rights Commission launched an investigation into the death of Sukra Munda. Munda, son of late Halu Munda from Nabanagar, Kalagachiya, died while in state custody. He was held at Kendriya Sansodhanagar, Bishalgarh, since February 2, 2026. He faced charges under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, specifically Special case 138/2026.
Prison doctors sent Munda to the AGMC and GBP Hospital in Agartala on August 10. He arrived at the male medicine ward at 12:15 pm. Doctors moved him to the R-ICU shortly after admission. He died in that unit at 10:14 pm on August 20. The Officer-in-Charge of Sidhai Police Station notified the family to collect the body.
Justice Arindam Lodh issued the order for the probe. The commission must scrutinize the death. The Inspector General of Prisons has four weeks to submit a full account. The panel demands health screening records from his time in custody plus all medical charts. They also want the inquest report, the post-mortem findings, the viscera chemical analysis, and a full magisterial inquiry. Officials must provide video footage of the autopsy as well.
The commission sent a notice to the National Human Rights Commission in New Delhi. The report order covers every detail of his final days. Authorities have not yet determined the final cause of death. Justice Lodh confirmed the scope of the inquiry, stating, "The Commission said that since Munda died while in custody, it was its duty to examine the cause of death and the circumstances in which it occurred."
