Agartala: The Tripura government formed a three-member Special Investigation Team to look into the unnatural death of DGP Anurag Dhankar. West Tripura Superintendent of Police Namit Pathak leads the unit. Additional SP Dhruba Nath and Sub-Inspector Subhojit Deb complete the team. The group now holds the case file following Dhankar's death on July 20.
Dhankar, a 1994-batch IPS officer, was found hanging inside his office washroom at the Agartala police headquarters. Staff rushed him to a government hospital, but doctors declared him dead. Police registered an unnatural death case under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita.
Forensic experts are working now. They seized the DGP's mobile phone, laptop, and personal computer to search for clues. The SIT may bring in extra help from the Tripura Police Crime Branch or the Cyber Crime Unit as the case moves forward. Officials stated, "The future course of the investigation would depend on the outcome of the forensic analysis and other evidence collected during the probe."
The SIT must file weekly progress reports to Inspector General Manchak Ipper. These updates will eventually reach the Director General of Police. Chief Minister Manik Saha confirmed the state intends to follow the law throughout the process.
Dhankar led major national cases before his death. He once directed the CBI probe into the 13,000-crore Punjab National Bank fraud involving Nirav Modi. He also supervised the reinvestigation of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. His family held last rites on July 22 in his native village of Baraut, located in Uttar Pradesh.
