Agartala: Tripura Director General of Police Anurag Dhankar was found dead inside a washroom at the Police Headquarters in Agartala on Monday. Forensic experts believe the 60-year-old officer died by hanging. A metal wall rod reportedly served as the attachment point for a stolen dupatta used in the incident.
Staff members grew concerned after Dhankar, who arrived at work at 10 a.m., instructed his orderly to block all visitors for one hour. When the DGP failed to emerge, officials knocked repeatedly before using a carpenter to break down the locked door. Security personnel had reported hearing an unusual sound between 11:30 a.m. and 11:40 a.m.
Dr. Pradip Bhowmik of GB Hospital confirmed that medical teams performed CPR for 48 minutes after the officer arrived in critical condition. Dhankar was declared dead at 12:48 p.m. Chief Minister Manik Saha confirmed the preliminary post-mortem results but stated, "Everything will be done according to law."
A 1994-batch IPS officer, Dhankar had served Tripura for 18 years. He previously led high-profile national cases, including the 1984 anti-Sikh riots probe and the Nirav Modi banking fraud investigation. He also served with the United Nations in Kosovo and the Central Industrial Security Force. He leaves behind his wife and a son based in Canada.
Acting DGP G.S. Rao announced that a committee of senior officers will investigate the death. Police have seized Dhankar’s mobile phone, laptop, and personal computer, which are slated for forensic analysis at the Narsingarh State Forensic Science Laboratory. Results may take up to six weeks.
Opposition leader Jitendra Chaudhury rejected a CBI inquiry, labeling the agency a political tool. He demanded a judicial probe overseen by a sitting Tripura High Court judge. Chaudhury claimed he spoke with Dhankar recently and found the officer deeply distressed.
State honors were held Tuesday at the Secretariat, where Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu and Chief Minister Saha paid their respects. The officer's body was flown to New Delhi. His final rites are scheduled for Wednesday in his native village of Baraut, located in the Baghpat district of Uttar Pradesh.
