Agartala: Tripura Director General of Police Anurag Dhankar is dead. He was 55. Authorities found the 1994-batch IPS officer hanging inside the bathroom of his office at the Police Headquarters in Agartala on Monday, July 20.
Staff rushed him to the Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital at 12:00 pm. He arrived with no pulse or blood pressure. Dr. Pradip Bhowmik and his medical team performed resuscitation efforts for 48 minutes. It was futile. "He was brought in with no signs of life. After repeated attempts, we had to declare him dead at 12:48 pm," Bhowmik said.
Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha visited the headquarters immediately after the discovery. The site is now a crime scene. Forensic teams have collected evidence from the office chamber. A magisterial inquiry is underway to determine the circumstances of the death, pending a final post-mortem report.
Dhankar took the top police post in May 2025, replacing Amitabh Ranjan. His three-decade career included roles with the CBI, BSF, CISF, and the Bureau of Police Research and Development. He also served abroad with the United Nations Mission in Kosovo. The government recognized his work with the Police Medal for Meritorious Service and the President's Police Medal for Distinguished Service.
The Tripura Cabinet declared July 21 as a day of state mourning. Flags will fly at half-mast on government buildings. No official entertainment will take place. Dhankar leaves behind a wife, who lives in Agartala, and a son currently based in Canada.
