Agartala: The Tripura government launched a three-member Special Investigation Team to probe the unnatural death of Director General of Police Anurag Dhankar. West Tripura Superintendent of Police Namit Pathak leads the unit. The team also includes Additional SP Dhruba Nath and Sub-Inspector Subhojit Deb. Deb previously served as the lead investigator on the case.
Dhankar, a 1994-batch IPS officer, died July 20. Staff found him hanging in the washroom of his chamber at the state police headquarters in Agartala. The death stunned the state police force. Government orders from July 24 grant Pathak authority to pull in help from the Tripura Police Crime Branch or any other unit. The team can also tap the cyber crime unit for technical assistance.
The SIT must file weekly reports to Inspector General of Law and Order Manchak Ipper. These updates go directly to the Director General of Police. Dhankar held a high-profile career. He previously led the CBI probe into the 13,000-crore rupee Punjab National Bank fraud tied to Nirav Modi. He also managed the reinvestigation into the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. His family held his final rites on July 22 in his native village of Baraut, located in the Baghpat district of Uttar Pradesh. Officials hope the investigation clarifies the circumstances of the tragedy, which one source described as something that "sent shockwaves through the police establishment."
