Agartala: Tripura Police has formed a multi-member investigation team to probe the death of Director General of Police Anurag Dhankar. He was found hanging in his office washroom on July 20. The state registered an unnatural death case under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita.
The team is led by West Tripura Superintendent of Police Namit Pathak. Additional Superintendent of Police Dhruba Nath and Sub-Inspector Subhojit Deb are assisting him. The team can pull in Crime Branch officers and Cyber Crime experts as needed. They must report to the Inspector General of Police weekly. Forensic experts are currently scrubbing Dhankar’s seized mobile phone, laptop, and computer for clues.
Dhankar was a 1994-batch IPS officer. He once led the CBI probe into the 13,000-crore Punjab National Bank fraud tied to Nirav Modi. He also handled the 1984 anti-Sikh riots reinvestigation. Doctors at a government hospital declared him dead after he was found unconscious in his office.
Former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar is pushing for a probe led by a sitting Tripura High Court judge. Sarkar warned that the government’s refusal to seek judicial oversight creates public doubt. "Anurag Dhankar's unnatural death is truly unbelievable. A fair and impartial investigation is essential to uncover the truth," Sarkar said. He claimed the state’s law and order had worsened, putting immense pressure on the police force.
Chief Minister Manik Saha rejected these claims. He insisted the government will follow the law and conduct a fair inquiry. Saha urged politicians to stop using the tragedy for gain. The investigation remains in its early stages as officials wait for forensic results.
