Agartala: Tripura Director General of Police Anurag Dhankar died on Monday, July 20, following a suspected suicide inside his office at the Police Headquarters in Agartala. The 1994-batch IPS officer was found hanging in the washroom of his official chamber.
Staff rushed Dhankar to the Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital around 12:00 pm. He arrived with no detectable vital signs. Dr. Pradip Bhowmik of the hospital reported that medical teams performed CPR for 48 minutes before declaring him dead at 12:48 pm. Doctors effectively categorized him as brought dead.
Chief Minister Manik Saha visited the police headquarters alongside the Chief Secretary and Home Secretary after learning of the event. Expressing his grief, Saha stated, "I am deeply shocked and saddened by the tragic demise of Anurag, IPS, Director General of Police, Tripura, who was found hanging in the washroom of his official chamber today."
Dhankar, who previously served as Director General of Intelligence and held a post at the Central Bureau of Investigation, became Tripura’s police chief in May 2025. He succeeded Amitabh Ranjan in the role.
DGP-in-Charge G.S. Rao confirmed that an investigation is underway. While no special team exists yet, officials plan to form a panel to monitor the case closely. Authorities currently await the results of a post-mortem examination to confirm the exact cause of death.
Governor Indra Sena Reddy Nallu joined the Chief Minister at the State Secretariat to pay final respects. A three-member police team, including Inspector General M. Ipper, Traffic Superintendent Kanta Jangir, and the Commandant of the 2nd Battalion of the Tripura State Rifles, accompanied Dhankar’s body to his hometown in Uttar Pradesh. The family scheduled his last rites for Wednesday.
