Agartala: The Tripura High Court forced the suspension of Sushanta Deb, the Officer-in-Charge of the Airport Police Station in Agartala. The court intervened after reports showed police refused to file a First Information Report for nearly a month following a woman's complaint regarding a cognizable offence. The situation escalated when the victim faced further intimidation. Police detained her and pressured her to drop the complaint.
Senior advocate Purushottam Roy Barman represented the petitioner during the proceedings. He stated, "Instead of fulfilling their legal obligation, police allegedly detained the complainant, subjected her to harassment, and pressured her to withdraw her case." West Tripura District Superintendent of Police Namit Pathak had ordered the station to register an FIR 25 days prior, but the command was ignored.
The Chief Justice reviewed the matter on Wednesday after the FIR was finally logged. By Thursday, the court confirmed Deb faced immediate suspension for his failure to act. The victim reported new threats on Wednesday, prompting the court to order police to provide her with security. The court continues to monitor the investigation, with another hearing scheduled for Friday to track accountability.
