Guwahati: The Jiadhal River surged Saturday morning, flooding low-lying villages in the Dhemaji district of Assam. Heavy rain in the upper catchment of Arunachal Pradesh triggered the spillover. Water rushed into the area after a river channel breached its course early in the day.
Floodwaters hammered Kamalpur-Dharmapur village. The current wiped out the home of Anima Hazarika. Neighbors rushed to the scene to save the elderly resident and her ailing daughter. Witnesses saw the daughter struggle with the loss. She broke down while watching the structure wash away, saying the disaster was "heartbreaking" as the water claimed their home.
The incident highlights the recurring danger of the Jiadhal River. Brief bouts of rain upstream frequently force the river over its banks. Villagers remain on edge as the monsoon season turns standard rainfall into a destructive flash flood threat.
