Guwahati: The Assam government is handing out 2 lakh rupees each to 11 people injured in a border shootout. The gunfire erupted on August 10 near Bodoti village in Dhemaji district. A land encroachment dispute sparked the violence. Education Minister Ranoj Pegu announced the payout on Friday.
Pegu posted his thanks to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on social media. He wrote: "My sincere gratitude to HCM @himantabiswa for providing financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh each to the 11 persons from Bodoti village under Ming Mang GP in Dhemaji district who were injured in the gunfire incident along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border on 10 August."
The injured victims are Utpal Doley, Bhaijan Doley, Pame Pegu, Bitupan Doley, Bigeswar Patir, Bishnu Pegu, Lakhi Prasad Lagachu, Rakesh Doley, Sanjay Tayung, Rohit Doley, and Rakesh Lagachu. All reside in Bodoti under the Mingmang Gram Panchayat. Pegu visited these patients at the Assam Medical College and Hospital in Dibrugarh.
Medical teams confirmed that everyone is out of danger. One patient already finished surgery. Another faces eye surgery this weekend. Officials expect to discharge the group soon.
The attack triggered massive protests. The Takam Mising Porin Kebang student group launched an economic blockade against Arunachal Pradesh. They paused the protest Thursday night. The group now demands the arrest of four suspects within 48 hours. Police continue to hunt for the shooters.
