Assam Schools Eye Mid-August Reopening Following Severe Floods

Shillong: Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu confirmed that schools in Sivasagar, Nazira, and Charaideo will likely restart classes after August 15. The timeline depends on floodwaters receding and crews finishing site repairs. Right now, over 150 schools remain underwater or coated in heavy mud and silt.

These conditions make classrooms unusable for students and teachers alike. Pegu says the Education Department is currently scouting the damage to ensure campus safety. "Classes at the affected institutions will be resumed after August 15, depending on the ground situation and the progress of restoration activities," the minister noted.

Upper Assam still struggles with the fallout from the recent surge. While water levels are dropping, public infrastructure remains battered. Local officials prioritize cleanup efforts to clear away debris and verify that buildings and access routes are safe. The government intends to evaluate each campus individually before letting students return to their desks. For now, the focus stays on clearing the filth left behind by the deluge.
