Guwahati: Students and teachers from four Tinsukia schools mobilized to help 325 families reeling from recent floods in the Nazira co-district of Sivasagar. The relief effort focused on Upper Assam, a region hit hard by surging waters that claimed more than 100 lives statewide last month. Flooding in Sivasagar, Jorhat, Golaghat, and Charaideo left thousands desperate for supplies.
The initiative brought together St. Mary’s Higher Secondary School in Doomdooma, St. Stephen’s Higher Secondary School in Tinsukia, St. Mary’s Higher Secondary School in Naharkatia, and BVFC Model School in Namrup. Supporters donated over Rs 4 lakh worth of gear. A 25-member crew led by Sister Rose Mary Angamilu, the Education Counsellor of the Sacred Heart Province, distributed these goods in Bamunbari Tea Estate, Tengahola, and Gohainbari.
Relief packages included mats, bedsheets, pillow covers, mosquito nets, buckets, mugs, water jars, steel plates, glasses, soaps, and dry food. Teacher and relief team member Abhijit Khataniar noted the reach of the effort. "Because that tea garden was badly affected and one girl lost her life, we decided to extend relief not only to the garden people but also to those living in the nearby basti areas," Khataniar said.
The team provided aid to Ahom, Mising, Sonowal Kachari, Nepali, and Bihari communities living near the point where the Dikhow river dyke breached. Sivasagar ADC Rananmoy Bharadwaj coordinated the site selection for the distribution.
