Guwahati: The Assam government introduced the Assam Higher Education Council Bill, 2026, in the Legislative Assembly on Tuesday, July 28. This move aims to build an apex coordinating body for the state's higher education sector under the National Education Policy 2020. Education Minister Ranoj Pegu stated that the bill bridges the gap between the University Grants Commission, the state government, and local universities. Currently, no dedicated body manages academic affairs alongside administration.
"The Assam Higher Education Council Bill, 2026, is in conformity with NEP 2020. We felt the need for an intermediary apex body that can coordinate among the UGC, the government and the universities," said Pegu. The council will split into a General Council and an Executive Council. Senior officials will lead the executive arm. University, college, and UGC representatives will populate the general body.
Floods hit 80 percent of schools in Sivasagar, Charaideo, and Jorhat. The situation is dire. Authorities are coordinating with the National Disaster Response Force and the State Disaster Response Force to assess the wreckage. Repair work starts once these reports arrive. Students need help now. The government already sourced fresh textbooks for Sivasagar and Charaideo, with delivery starting in two days. Additionally, roughly 1.5 lakh students lost their uniforms in the deluge.
