Guwahati: Tension grips the Ming Mang area near Gogamukh. An armed man from Arunachal Pradesh crossed into Assam on Tuesday and threatened locals near the Ayang River bridge. He brandished a gun and warned of gunfire. Local youths jumped him. They overpowered the man after a brief scuffle and drove him away.
This confrontation followed a violent Monday where 11 people suffered injuries. Locals called that incident unprovoked firing from the Arunachal Pradesh side. Earlier Tuesday, residents detained two other people at the Ming Mang market. They handed the pair to Gogamukh Police for interrogation.
Angry villagers gathered to protest at Bogee Pung. The site sits only 500 metres from the location of Monday’s shooting. Protesters demanded immediate justice. The crowd only left after police provided a specific guarantee. Officials promised the perpetrators would be caught within 48 hours. "The situation had already become tense earlier in the day when locals detained two persons from Arunachal Pradesh at the Ming Mang market," police sources noted.
Residents fear for their safety. They want effective measures to stop further fighting. The sensitive border region remains on edge as police work to keep the peace.
